Shanghai Government Scholarship With the aim of building the science and technology innovation center with global influence, promoting international cooperation and communication, and attracting more potential international students to study in Shanghai, the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government has set up places a “Shanghai Government Scholarship for International Students” (hereafter referred to as SGS) since 2006. It is established to fund distinctive prospective international students to study at higher education institutions in Shanghai.

Coverage and details:

The Shanghai Government Scholarship is categorized into Types A and B.

Type A (Full Scholarship): Covers tuition fees, housing and living expenses, and medical insurance during the relevant study period. It was created to fund excellent prospective students applying for postgraduate, undergraduate and pre-university programs.

Type B (Partial Scholarship): Covers tuition fees and medical insurance during the relevant study period. It was created to fund excellent prospective students applying for postgraduate and undergraduate programs.

Eligibility of applications:

(1) Applicant must be a non-Chinese citizen in good health.

(2) Age and Education:

Candidates applying for the undergraduate programs must obtain a high school diploma; for master’s and license programs; for doctoral programs, the candidate must have a master’s degree in addition must have research capabilities

25 years for license

35 years for master

40 years for doctorate

Candidates applying for the pre-university program must obtain a high school diploma under the age of 23, with a pre-admission letter to the undergraduate program from a Shanghai university.

(6) Applicant who received other scholarships offered by Chinese government or organizations are not allowed to apply for SGS.

Application:

Applicant can log on http://apply.study.shmec.gov.cn (Study in Shanghai website), which provides information about universities, courses, application periods and procedures. The candidate can apply for the scholarship on the website. The application period is generally from February to April. The application date and procedure may differ every year, please refer to the official websites of these universities.
